The slotted spoon…

Cuz I’m a theater dork, randomly some INTO THE WOODS lyrics were running through my head as I was ironing today.  I stopped on this one…

“The slotted spoon can catch the potato.”

I’ve been hearing it and singing it for years…never stopped to think about what it actually means. Here goes my theory.

The types of things that seemingly slip through our fingers… aren’t really meant for us to hold in the first place.  We can always see that in hindsight, but in the moment, it can be devastatingly disappointing.  (I still wonder why said things can’t just be kept from our sight to begin with…dangling a carrot and then yanking it away? Never my favorite way to ‘learn a lesson’.)

I imagine you, like me, often feel much like a slotted spoon. Shit just slipping right through and by you. Can’t get a solid grasp on anything…

Until the potato comes along. I mean it couldn’t get away if it tried!  You got this!! Cuz what you are (a slotted spoon) - is PERFECT for holding a potato. A round, dense, starchy, solid potato. Not some passing liquid that can spill or evaporate, or leave you hungry an hour later.  Of all the many things your heart wanted to catch and hold in your spoon before…this potato is better and more fulfilling than any of them.

So you see, in the end, sometimes your greatest weakness turns out to be your greatest strength. And what’s meant for you…can’t be kept or taken away.

Here’s to catching potatoes my friends. Have faith and trust the universe once in a while…
